The Subculture is a community outreach based in Mount Vernon, IL.  

We offer a community shower, a food bank, hygiene products, clothing distribution, and meal prep. There are two rooms available for temporary housing at our facility.  

Street people are our main demographic although we help all of those in need.  Most are homeless due to addictions, felonies, or some other obstacle that keeps them from getting a fair shake in society or government aide.  

We provide a space where they can come as they are, without judgment, and better themselves.  Our goal is to build relationships with these people, get them rehabilitated, re-educate them, and get them functioning in society again.  

The Subculture also provides a place for those who have been given a community service option, instead of jail time, a place where they can come and fulfill those obligations.  While these people are at our facility, they help with daily functions of The Subculture.  

The Subculture consists of a resale store, a bookstore, and a distribution center for clothing and other items taken in on a donation basis.  

Most of the people working with our programs do a majority of their work in the distribution center.  From our distribution center, we ship clothing and other items to other cities, states, and nations.  Last year alone we were able to help countless families in our community with food subsidies, free showers, clothing, hot meals, and replacement of items due to fires.  We were able to help several of the elderly in our community get into government assisted living with furnished apartments.  We helped pregnant teens with items from maternity and baby clothes, to car seats and other items.  

We were able to send clothing, coats, hats, and gloves to the Ukraine, send food and winter clothing to a new homeless shelter in another city, and blankets, pillows, and winter clothing to two warming centers in surrounding communities.  

Even with all of these accomplishments, we had to turn many away looking for shelter.  It is in our hearts to not have to turn any away.  Moving forward we want to have boarding houses for sheltering men and women.  We want to have educational programs for GEDs, trades, and a college courses in an array of studies.   

We need trucks for transporting and distributing goods, vans and buses for transportation of people, and of course more buildings to continue to grow and expand.
